  • Excessive gingival display is an unattractive smile characteristic also called as gummy smile
  • Excessive gingival display associated with multiple etiologies such as:
  1. Drug induced gingival fibromatosis
  2. Delayed passive eruption
  3. Vertical maxillary excess
  4. Short lip
  5. Hypermobility of upper lip

Treatment depend upon underlying etiology

  1. Excessive gingival display caused by Drug induced and delayed passive eruption are managed by gingivectomy with or without osseous surgery
  2. Excessive gingival display caused by short lip and hypermobility requires plastic surgery
  3. And excessive gingival display caused by vertical maxillary excess will be managed by orthognathic surgery
